It is important to understand that breast cancer
treatment involves multiple specialties, and that
it is individualized to each patient. Many, if not
most, breast cancer patients will receive chemotherapy,
radiation and/or hormonal therapy, in addition to
operative intervention. Genetic counseling may also
be necessary depending on family history and other
factors. It is important that care be coordinated
between various specialties, so that the timing of
the different treatments is individualized.
Some patients want to rush into an operation to "get
it over with". However, it is important that
each patient receive the best individual treatment,
and to accomplish this, each patient should take the
time to learn about all the options. In some cases,
additional x-rays, biopsies, or consultations may
be needed prior to proceeding. It is important to
understand that, with extremely rare exception, breast
cancer treatment is not an emergency. It is very understandable
that a woman just diagnosed with breast cancer would
want to get on with her life and get the treatments
behind her. However, we know that most breast cancers
have been present microscopically for years, and that
taking several weeks to gather the information necessary
to make an informed decision does not adversely affect
the outcome. Both medical and personal factors must
be taken into consideration in making a decision,
to ensure an adequate comfort level.
