After
Your Operation
Your follow-up instructions
depend on what procedure or operation you have had.
If you have had
an ultrasound guided cyst aspiration, or core needle
biopsy, you can remove your gauze dressing
in the evening, and leave the paper strips on until
they fall off. If you have a percutaneous excision of
a fibroadenoma, then you will have to leave a gauze
dressing and ace wrap in place for two days. A follow
up will be arranged before you leave the office, but
is usually about one week after the procedure. You will
be able to drive, unless you have taken Valium for the
procedure.
If you have had a mastectomy,
please call the office today or the following weekday
between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for an appointment to
be seen in the office in about one week.
- Activity: Exercise,
use your arm fully. Do not drive until seen in the
office for your postoperative visits.
- Return to work: Return
to work will be determined at the time oft the postoperative
visit, usually 3-4 weeks following surgery.
- Care of Incision:
You will be instructed on the care of your incision
following surgery.
- Discomfort: For
discomfort you will be provided with a surgical bra
following your surgery. Some swelling and discoloration
are to be expected. However, if discomfort seems greater
than what you anticipated, or if there is a large
amount of swelling, please notify the office.
- Pain medication:
For pain medication you may use Tylenol. 650-1,000
mg, Advil, Nuprin, or Motrin 400-600mg every 4 hours,
which is usually sufficient for relief of incisional
discomfort. However, if this does not suffice, you
may fill the prescription given to you.
- Your report: The
tissue report from the procedure will be available
when you have your postoperative visits and will be
discussed with you at that time.

comfortable doing.
